Summer….the time for family, travel, backyard bbq’s, and beautiful beach days. With all that the summer months have to offer, it’s easy to get sidetracked from your normal routines -including your regular workout. Taking a break can reduce motivation and make it a struggle (both physically AND mentally) to get back on track with your workouts. Here are some simple tips to help you ease back in:
Don’t overdo it right away.
You might not be as fit as you once were, and that’s okay! Keep intensity low (50-60% of your perceived ability), and gradually push yourself more as long as you aren’t getting overly sore.
Design a workout plan with 3 key components.
Your exercise plan should include cardiovascular endurance, resistance training, and flexibility. Spin, TRX, Pilates and Yoga are great ways to incorporate the necessary elements. Sign up for classes here!
Start slow and focus on your form.
Be kind to your body and give it time to readapt. Muscles need to be rebuilt, connective tissues need to restrengthen. Learn more about mindful movement and its importance here.
Don’t forget rest days.
Recovery is an important part of being active. Giving your body the chance to repair and replenish is the key to long-term wellness.
Stretch!
Stretching is especially important when renewing your fitness routine. It’ll help reduce the initial soreness and ultimately make your workouts more efficient and safe by increasing blood flow and circulation. Listen to your body.
Your body will let you know it’s working hard, but learn to differentiate between “hurts-so-good” and actual pain.
Find a friend who keeps you motivated.
Not only is it a great excuse to see a favorite friend, but you’ll also keep each other motivated and hold one another accountable.
Set S.M.A.R.T. goals.
As in specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time sensitive. Is your goal to feel stronger? Lose weight? Run a 5K? Create a plan and remind yourself often why you’re working out.
